CM M.K. Stalin Inaugurates Ranipet Facility; First Made-in-India Range Rover Evoque Rolls Out
Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have inaugurated a ₹9,000 crore greenfield manufacturing facility in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, marking a major expansion of premium vehicle production in India.
The plant was formally inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who described the project as a significant boost to the state’s industrial growth and employment generation. During the ceremony, the first locally manufactured Range Rover Evoque rolled off the assembly line, signalling the start of operations at the facility.

Strategic Expansion of Premium and EV Manufacturing
The Ranipet facility strengthens Tata Motors’ position in India’s automotive manufacturing ecosystem while integrating Jaguar Land Rover’s premium portfolio into a local production base.
According to statements from Tata Group leadership, the plant will be developed in phases, with plans to scale capacity to approximately 2.5 to 3 lakh vehicles annually over the next several years. The facility is designed to manufacture both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric models, aligning with global electrification trends.
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran highlighted the strategic importance of the investment, noting that the facility enhances India’s role in JLR’s global manufacturing network and supports long-term growth in domestic and export markets.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The ₹9,000 crore investment is expected to generate around 5,000 direct jobs, along with substantial indirect employment through supplier networks and ancillary industries.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa stated that the plant is among the first in India capable of producing luxury and electric vehicles at scale, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a leading automotive manufacturing hub.
The project was completed within a relatively short timeline, demonstrating coordination between state authorities and corporate stakeholders.
Strengthening India’s Automotive Supply Chain
The Ranipet plant is positioned to deepen localisation in premium automotive manufacturing, improve supply chain resilience, and support technology adoption in next-generation mobility solutions.
Industry analysts note that expanding domestic production of luxury vehicles could reduce import dependency, improve cost efficiency, and enhance India’s competitiveness in global automotive exports.
With operations now underway, the facility marks a significant milestone in Tata Motors’ long-term expansion strategy and Tamil Nadu’s broader industrial development roadmap.
